Many people I know may find that hard to believe, but before I picked up a dental hand piece, I worked for eight years as a landscaper. My summer days were made up of cutting grass, trim-ming bushes, sweating in the heat and searching out any spot of shade with a breeze. During this time, I spent count-less hours walking behind a lawn mower. Some people may find that tedious, boring or tiring, but there are a few important principles we can learn from lawn mowers. YOU NEED FUEL: Having a lawn mower is important to the job, but it doesn't do much if you don't have the fuel to get it started and keep it running. Similarly we can have a great education and a wonderful office, but we need the motivation or fuel to keep it going. Our Annual meeting in Denver this year with its lineup of great speak-ers is the motivation or fuel you will need to keep your great office and your orthodontic treatment running. DON'T WAIT TOO LONG: Keep-ing your lawn in good shape is impor-tant. If you do not attend to it or let it go too long and the grass gets to tall, then it just gets harder to take care of. In our lives and in our practice, there are certain things that we have to do and if we leave it too long, it just gets harder and harder. Dental school was simply a starting point for a lifetime of learning and the pursuit of excellence. Being part of AOS and the AGpO and taking orthodontic courses was a start in pursing orthodontic excellence. It's important to continue that journey by keeping up with what is new and purs-ing credentialing through Fellowship and Diplomate achievement. Tackle credentialing now rather than waiting for the grass to grow around you, making an already tough task even more challenging. Take that Early Treat-ment course you're been thinking about, attend a course on Interceptive Orthodontics and make sure you don't let the grass start to get too long under your feet. IT'S MORE SATISFYING WHEN YOU DO IT YOURSELF: A lawn always looks nice after its been mowed. But strangely, it looks even better when we've taken the time to cut it ourselves. This isn't because we've done a better job, but rather because of the satisfac-tion that we get from looking at a task we've completed ourselves. A dental degree is a license to learn more about dentistry. Take it upon yourself to get out and become the best practitioner who offers orthodontics to your patients that you can be. No one else is going to do it for you. You have to take the time and energy to take additional courses, attend meetings and read jour-nal articles. It's hard work, but it's also much more satisfying when the job's done. Get busy pushing that lawn mower and I'll see you in Denver or at one of our many great courses.
