AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Working Together to Broaden Orthodontic Care On February 1, 2011, along with AOS Executive Director Tom Chapman, I boarded a flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The first Dubai Mastership Course in Compre-hensive Orthodontics and Chris Baker, RN, DMD AOS President Craniofacial Orthopedics would be an amazing begin-ning to the American Orthodontic Society’s Interna-tional outreach to doctors from all over the globe. Each day started off with a buffet breakfast offered by the Monarch Hotel, the five-star hotel that was our home away from home for the six days of teaching for 10 hours. The dedication, commitment, motivation and gracious culture of these doctors made the course a great one. Dr. Majid Rahmani, our host and course organizer, and his team had planned every detail to perfection. The doctors started off each morning with a quiz, though several times during the evening times together, we heard one of the doctors imploring of me, “no quiz, no quiz!” I replied, “yes, quiz!” The enjoyment by all was evident, not only during the evening dinners full of laughter and fun, but also every day as each doctor’s thinking and treatment planning exhibited understanding and quality. Their energies and willingness to work hard brought honor to our American Orthodontic Society as the new members worked to understand and master the diagnos-tic principles and skills as well as the treatment planning being practiced. Many of the doctors have case experi-ences of over 50, 100, 500 – and yes, 1000 cases, and joined the course to continue their quest for constant and never-ending improvement. The doctors have strong interest in the connections between health, disease, orthodontics and mind-body, and use these awarenesses in their clinical and educational endeavors. As the AOS reach expands to the other side of the globe, we know our strength is in our people – our membership – YOU. It is with humility that I say thank you to you for being part of an organization that reaches out to other doctors, to help make it possible to change each of our lives, and through our membership, change many patient lives. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” That is what the AOS is about – we are brave, five minutes longer. We hold on to our goals and keep on transforming lives, one smile at a time. American Orthodontic Society hero that you are, keep on keeping on! It was an honor to work with these doctors in the beautiful, cultured and gracious United Arab Emirates, and we look forward to taking your AOS back for the next of the four-session course. Come join us – it would be so great to have you there! Experience the hero’s jour-ney of never-ending improvement in your AOS! Love, Chris Baker, RN, DMD Annual Meeting Plans Announced!
