AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS AOS Launches International Comprehensive Course in United Arab Emirates By Tom Chapman, CAE, Executive Director Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is now added to the list of cities that has hosted an American Orthodontic Society course. This past February, in partnership with the Academic Center for Dental Fellowship, the AOS launched its first international comprehensive course. Taught by AOS Board Presi-dent and Senior Instructor, Dr. Chris Baker, this Mastership Orthodontic Course welcomed 33 international dentists, and new AOS members, to the beautiful Monarch Dubai Hotel. This course will encompass 200 hours of instruction over the next year, with plans underway for additional levels of instructional programs. Even though the entire program is taught with an interpreter, the understand-ing of the subject matter was evident as students peppered ques-tions at Dr. Baker throughout the six instructional days. While there, Dr. Baker and AOS Executive Direc-tor, Mr. Tom Chapman, attended the final day of the UAE Interna-tional Dental Conference. Compris-ing over 500 dental exhibitors and a 62 March/April 2011 JAOS three-day educational program, it is the largest dental exposition in the Middle East. The AOS is excited to bring our quality education to the Middle East and to welcome our newest colleagues and members. Dubai, known as the City of Merchants, was nothing more than a village along Dubai Creek until oil was discovered in their region forty-five years ago. With a masterful vision by Sheikh Zayed fueled initially by the riches of oil, the leaders have grown this region, most notably Dubai, into an interna-tional financial center. Known for its willing-ness to accept and blend multi-cultural and religious thoughts, Dubai has become home to count-less companies from around the world. With the world’s tallest building, a skyline that is an archi-tectural wonder, and a contempo-rary monorail transportation system, Dubai is postured to grow for many years. The AOS is excited to be a part of this dynamic region.
