AGpO MEMBERSHIP NEWS Renowned Orthodontist Lawrence Andrews Dies at 94 Lawrence F. Andrews, DDS, died on Oct. 25, 2024. In 2023, Andrews received the Albert A. Ketcham Award from the American Board of Orthodontics, considered by many the top award for lifetime contributions to the field. Born in Florence, SC, on Nov. 1, 1929, Andrews was a standout high school athlete and served as president of his sophomore and senior classes. He attended Toledo University on a tennis scholarship and, after three years of undergraduate pre-dental studies, completed dental school at the Ohio State University. Andrews played foot-ball for the Buckeyes during the 1951 season under Coach Woody Hayes. Andrews began his career serving in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. After completing his military service, he returned to Ohio State to pursue specialty training in orthodontics. He began prac-ticing orthodontics in San Diego, where he had been stationed during his time in the Dental Corps. Andrews’s impact on orthodontics was immense. He was admired and respected for his research, innovations and clinical excellence. According to his obituary, which first appeared in the San Diego Union-Tribune , many would place him among the most preeminent orthodontists of all time. Andrews made his first significant mark in orthodontics by publishing a landmark study titled “The Six Keys to Normal Occlusion” in the early 1970s. He then developed the style of braces known as the Straight-Wire Appliance, revolution-izing orthodontic treatment. His research also led to new treatment stan-dards, diagnostic methods and treat-ment strategies. Andrews was an inventor, entrepreneur, clinician, researcher, author, mentor and teacher. He earned numerous honorary degrees, professor-ships and awards during his career. In addition to the Albert A. Ketcham Award, he was honored with Ohio State’s Distinguished Medalist Alumnus Award. Through it all, Andrews continued to practice as a clinical orthodontist in the San Diego community. Over his 60-year career, he garnered a reputation among local families for kindness, integrity and producing beautiful treatment results. Andrews was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Sharon, parents and brother, Bud.
