CASE STUDY “Teeth that are badly decayed or experience fractures are sometimes condemned to removal when they could still be predictably restored. Forced eruption is a conservative option that leaves other treatment choices available should it not prove successful.” prove successful. Case selection is important. Being sure to have adequate crown to root ratio at completion is important. Other options may either be costlier 17 or be esthetically less predictable, 18 and take you further down the decision tree of choices. In many situations, crown lengthening surgery would be a viable choice, however if the tooth is positioned in the anterior, the forced eruption may be a more esthetic choice. If a tooth were to fail after forced eruption, extraction and replace-ment with an implant could still be accomplished. A traditional bridge is also a valid choice. Again, it could be used if the tooth were to fail, but with consequences to the soft tissue contours. Forced eruption, done carefully, will leave the gingival contours relatively unaffected. Forced eruption is a good first option, often overlooked, that can be followed up with more invasive solutions if treatment needs to be revisited. cated crown-root incisor fractures,” British Dental Journal, 11 Nov. 2000, pp.477-478. 3.
