AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS A Time for Celebration Happy Summer! Following the conclusion of another school year, I am reminded of how blessed we are to be dentists. Even more than that, the opportunity to create beautiful smiles and improve self-esteem through orthodontics. As a pediatric dentist, the excitement of summer is combined with the ‘sadness’ of now sending Susan B. Tiede, DDS my older patients to a “big people dentist” as we refer to AOS President general dentists in our office. Every year, I am moved to receive graduation announcements from patients for whom I have been honored to care. It is a great responsibility to trust one’s children to a provider, and a concept I have never taken lightly. This year was particularly striking personally because as I thumbed through these joyful images of my patients, I realized that I had completed orthodontic treatment on at least 90% of those stunning smiles that were now being shared with all their friends and families too. It is so easy to get caught up in our practices, our families, our studies, our lives — we can forget the real impact we continue to have on our patients. I feel it’s critical to remind ourselves what an honor our profes-sion is and to work to not lose sight of it. As we look forward to the 50th Anniversary of the American Orthodon-tic Society, let’s not forget our why? Why we do what we do. Why do we continually strive to be better at what we do. Why do we make continuing education paramount in our already busy and hectic professional lives. I am so proud to be a part of an organization that continues to strive for excellence. We respect and adhere to the values of improving our skillset, our talents and our craft. We have reason to smile along with our patients in their celebratory times…of which we have absolutely played a part. I hope to see you all for the Annual Meeting, October 17-19, in Dallas. We will truly be celebrating 50 years of excellence and be preparing for AOS 2.0! With our new AOS Institute and leadership, there is so much to be excited about and to celebrate. Thank you all for the honor of being your President for the 2023-2024 year. I am proud to call you all my peers and look forward to the years ahead.
