With the end of July and the start of August, we have begun to “cele-brate” Shark Week across the stream-ing world. And why would we not want to celebrate these remarkable creatures who are at the top of the food chain in the ocean? Often these efficient killers bring terror to swim-mers and surfers around the beaches of the world. Great Whites, Hammer-heads, Tiger Sharks, Mako Sharks and Whale Sharks are amongst the most well-known species found in the shark family. As I spent the week viewing this amazing and diverse group of predators, I realized that there are a few helpful principles that we can learn from sharks. NEVER STOP MOVING. As a part of their streamlined design, most of the larger species of sharks need to always keep moving in order to breathe. They take water in through their mouths and the water passes over their gills in a process called “ram ventilation.” If they stop moving for a short period of time, they drown and die. We live in a world that is going through constant dramatic change. It might be exces-sive to suggest that if we stop moving, we’ll die, but it’s still impor-tant to remember that if we don’t continue to learn, grow and develop, we’ll potentially be left behind and will struggle to stay afloat. For that reason, it’s important to continue to move and grow through attending the courses and annual meetings offered by our organizations. In addi-tion, reading articles and informa-tion provided by this Journal provides a way for us to stay afloat and keep moving. NEVER MISS AN OPPORTUNITY. Sharks have an extraordinary sense of smell and are able to sense blood in the water from miles away. In addition, the iconic Hammerhead sharks can detect electrical currents through their uniquely-shaped heads that also enable them to find their prey effectively. Once they find what they’re looking for, they hone in to catch themselves a meal. Are you on the constant lookout for opportuni-ties? Every fall, our great organiza-tions put together an Annual Meet-ing full of lectures, courses and a chance to meet with industry reps to discuss the latest in orthodontic and dental innovations. Make sure to seize the opportunity to learn and find innovative solutions at this year’s Fall gathering. EQUIP YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS. Sharks are well-equipped for their role at the top of the food chain. Rows of razor-sharp teeth that get replaced over time, a streamlined body that’s built for speed and the ability to detect prey from a distance combine to make them extremely effective hunters. How have you equipped yourself for success with the orthodontic treatment you provide in your office? Are you taking advantage of all the courses offered to you both online and in person? SHARKS ARE ALWAYS FLEXI-BLE. Sharks are incredibly flexible because they’re made of cartilage, thus they have no bones. They are strong and muscular, but they’re also light so they can change, pivot and shift according to circum-stances. It is important to be able to adapt to new environments and changes. We are here with the Jour-nal and our courses and meetings to help you be flexible and adapt to change. Sharks are in the 5 percent of species that have survived five major mass extinction events. Change is one of the hardest things for humans to do because we are creatures of habit, so be sure to create great habits and rituals you can rely on. Start by attending our great courses and meetings. As Aris-totle said, “We are what we repeat-edly do.” I’ll see you this Fall! EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS .............
