If you do, you will fail. So, before you climb Everest you need to: Practice on and overcome smaller peaks first. Train incessantly until your skills are elite. Get yourself a support team to help you on your way. Find mentors who have been there before you. Create a strategy for climbing the mountain, and stay focused when things go wrong. If you want to climb Everest you need to understand that doing this will take years to achieve, but it’s worth it if you want to stand on top of the world. Now replace climbing Everest with the goal of achieving Diplomate Status in your organizations tier advancement or replace it with refin-ing and expanding your orthodontic skills and treatment and apply the same principles. Practice on Smaller goals. Take one of the many advanced or informative courses offered by AOS or AGpO. In addition, sign up to attend the great Annual Meetings being offered this year. You will have a chance to hear some of the outstanding lectures and presenta-tions and meet with all the great industry reps at the yearly meeting this Fall. Train incessantly. As you put together your cases to present, you will learn so much and become a better practitioner. The advanced and refresher courses offered to you as well as the speakers and lecturers at the Annual Meeting will help assist you on getting to the summit. Get a great support team and a mentor. Your course instructors and the lecturers and presenters at the Spring Meeting and Board Eligible Review Course are there to assist and aid you as you move toward the peak of orthodontic achievement. All the past Diplomates have made the climb your taking and they are ready and willing to support and assist you as you work to conquer that peak. Execute an effective strategy. Take the time to organize your cases and to attend meetings and reviews. The Journal is also here to assist you by presenting cases and articles for you to see and review from others who have made the climb to the top of tier advancement. Stay focused. Orthodontic treat-ment involves long term thinking. Taking the time and effort to move forward involves keeping in mid where you are headed. Whether you are trying to climb a mountain or put together a case study, your ability to focus can mean the difference between success or failure. Lifelong learning is a prac-tice and a mindset. Investing in your development through ongoing continuing education, adding new proficiencies or bolstering existing skills has proven to be the best way to keep yourself prepared for the challenge of scaling whatever “peak” you decide to take on. Greatness cannot be achieved in a matter of moments, otherwise it would not be greatness. But if you prepare yourself properly and do the work, the view is spectacular.
