This past Memorial Day weekend, I took the opportunity to travel to Kauai, Hawaii so that I could attend the AOS Early Orthodontic Treatment Symposium. The speakers, Drs. Ed Gonzalez, Len Carapezza, and Elsa Echeverri, were amazing. There were 62 registered dentists who attended, and most were pediatric specialists. It was great to see so many doctors that were ready to move their practices from being in a pond to the ocean. Let me explain what I mean. A pond is a small body of water. It has limited resources and there is only so much room. Of course, there are times when there is extra water from rains that fall, but there are also peri-ods of drought that puts extra pressure on all who live in the pond. By contrast, an ocean is immense. It has seemingly unlimited resources and there is an abundance of space. It can be unpredictable and dangerous, but whatever the conditions, there is always enough to go around and more left over. By adding orthodontics to the treatment you provide to your patients, and by continuing to update the orthodontic treatment you provide by attending the outstanding courses and meetings available to you from our great organization, you move from being a practice in a "pond" to being a practice in an "ocean". A practice in a pond looks safe. By avoiding new treatment options, you can stay comfortable with what you are use to. But the tiny pond has limited resources, so that whenever the practice hits a dry spell, you have to wonder how much longer you can survive. Competition can become fierce when you haven't expanded the treatment you offer and new inhabitants who set up in your area end up being treated with fear and suspicion. By adding orthodontics as part of the treatment you offer to your patients and by continuing to refresh and update yourself at Annual Meet-ings, and at any of the great courses offered by our organization, you move yourself out of the pond and into the ocean. In this "ocean", resources are unlimited because you take the time and put your energy into continuing to educate and update yourself. There is enough for anyone who is willing to work hard and see the opportunities that this Journal and organization place all around you. In this arena, there is no reason to fear competition or others who also practice orthodontics because there is ample room for everyone. So where would you rather live? The doctors who were in attendance at the wonderful Kauai meeting took the steps to move their practice from a pond, a place of scarcity and limited resources to the ocean, a place of abundance. Start with our Annual Meeting this Fall to add to your knowledge and expertise and put your practice in the ocean. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS .......................
