Thus, through her, I have been introduced to their great summer cycling event, the Tour de France. I have never known a lot about cycling but I have developed a lot of admiration for this sport, which combines phenomenal feats of endurance with a breathtakingly beautiful countryside. I have observed the tour and I have found three distinct categories of riders at any stage of the race: they are the strag-glers, the pack and the fearless few. THE STRAGGLERS: The stragglers have found the going to be tough; they are way behind the pack and are hoping to finish. It could be that they fell in an earlier stage and are injured, or that they are inexperienced and just don't have the conditioning needed to keep up. THE PACK: The French word for pack is Peloton. This describes the main pack of cyclists who ride in a large bunch. They will often use their mass to save energy by slip-streaming. There is safety in riding with the peloton. There is less strain on the body and the workload is shared. Yet all it takes is for one rider to fall to bring down everyone around him or her. If you stay in the pack, you'll probably finish the race, but you'll never land on the winner’s platform. Most people ride in the peloton. In the pack you're anonymous, pretty safe and you don't have to work as hard as others who lead you. There is no reason to think for yourself, make decisions or show initiative. You can cruise along without extending yourself. THE FEARLESS FEW: In the Tour de France, there are those who have the courage, audacity and initiative to leave the safety of the pack. They go alone attacking the moun-tains with energy and vigor. They take the risk and give all that they have in the hope that their efforts will give them glory and victory. They know it's harder, but they also know that they have to be fearless and bold if they are going to make their mark. These three categories of riders and their traits can also be seen within other groups. And thankfully, our great organizations are here to assist members who find themselves in each category. If you find yourself as a straggler, we are here with courses and lectures to get you the support you need to get through the tough times you may be experiencing. By taking more classes and attending meetings, you will get the infor-mation you need to start to move forward. There are always instructors and teachers available to assist and support you. If you are in the peloton and are just hanging out riding the slipstream, staying anonymous and cruising along, then I encourage you to break free from the pack. Set more ambitious goals and work toward advancing your orthodontic knowledge and treatment. Again you can find this though the courses offered, as well as tier advance-ment articles and case studies in this Journal and our outstanding annual meetings. Set more ambitious goals for your orthodontic treatment: goals that will demand more energy and effort and push you forward. If you are one of the fearless few, congratula-tions, you have my admiration. You have worked hard to surge forward and break out of the pack. This past April, four members of the AOS made the move to serge ahead of the pack by becoming Diplomates. Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Dahm, Dr. Anna Kalmanovich, Dr. Kylene Fernandez and Dr. Matthew Geddes. Watch for their case studies in future issues of the Journal and then begin your effort to also pull ahead of the pack. Keep riding don't look over your shoulder at those issues that would bring you back to the pack as you work to pull away. Continue to forge a path that will lead you to making your mark and getting to the winner’s platform. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS .......................
