The world begins to wake up: flowers start to appear and blossom, trees start to bud and fields are prepared for planting. Watching all this occur around me reminds me of parallels between the old Chinese tale of a farmer and our orthodontic practices. This farmer, like many of us, lived in a small rural community. Like his neighbors, he farmed traditional crops such as corn and wheat, but he wanted more than just the traditional work his neighbors did, so he started researching alternative crops and took a large piece of his land to add this new crop. After studying a variety of options, he decided on bamboo. The climate, soil conditions and equipment available to him could make growing and harvesting bamboo a profitable business. He was convinced this was the wisest choice and began making the changes needed to become a bamboo farmer. Many of his fellow farmers mocked him and called him foolish when he told them of the journey he was starting. Still, he was unshaken and had done extensive research on this endeavor and was confi-dent he had made the right decision. If you know anything about bamboo, you know that the first year after it’s planted, nothing happens. You don’t get so much as a twig or a leaf! So, his neigh-bors mocked him, they were still harvest-ing their traditional crops while he had less to show for his efforts. But he was undeterred and confident in his decision to add a new crop to his land. Through the second, third and fourth years, he endured the ridicule by his heartless neighbors as not a sign of a bamboo tree emerged. Then suddenly, his crop grew a foot a day! By the end of the fifth summer, he had a virtual bamboo forest. He harvested his bamboo crop and sold it for a huge profit. His neighbors were amazed. It looked as if it had happened overnight. But it only seemed that way; the plants had not been lying dormant for four years, instead they were silently growing underground, developing a strong root system secure enough to support its potential outward growth in that year and beyond. Like the farmer, we have looked into bringing a less traditional “crop” into our general and pediatric practices. Orthodontics, like bamboo, can be very profitable. We have taken the time to make our offices agreeable to “growing” orthodontics. At times, many of us have run into other dentists and specialists who mocked us about taking the time, energy and resources to bring something new into our office. It’s important to know that bamboo, like orthodontics, and any new treatment will need time to take root so that it can flourish and grow.
