The baby camel asked his mother, “Why do camels have humps?” The mother camel consid-ered this and said, “We are desert animals so we have the humps to store fat so we can survive for a long time without needing to drink and eat.” The baby thought for a moment then said, “Ok why are our legs long and our feet round?” The mother replied, “They are suited for walking long distances in the desert.” The baby again paused for a moment longer and then asked, “Why are our eyelashes so long? Sometimes they get in my way.” The mother responded, “Those beautiful long thick eyelashes protect your eyes from the harsh desert sand when it blows in the wind.” The baby thought and thought. Then he said, “I see. So, the hump is to store fat when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eyelashes protect my eyes from the desert sand. Then why do we live in the zoo?” Here’s the deal. We each have remarkable skills and abilities that are designed for a specific purpose. It would be a waste not to use them. It is important to recognize your talents and put them to the best use. Our great organizations give you a chance to recognize and improve your exten-sive orthodontic skills. In this issue of the Journal , there are several articles highlighting orthodontic treatment performed by pediatric dentists. In addition, we have an interview with one of the most well known pediatric dentists in the world, who has made orthodon-tics part of the treatment he offers to his young patients. His advocacy is credited with obtaining more than $100 million dollars in support of pediatric dental education. These pediatric dentists have seen what so many other pediatric and general dentists in our group have realized. You have a talent for relating to and taking care of your young patients and orthodontics should be a part of the treatment you offer to them as they grow and develop. So, make sure to offer them orthodontic treatment in your office. You have the skills: our organizations and this Journal will provide you with the knowledge and abilities needed to hone your talents to the best they can possibly be. Do this by attending the highly praised courses offered by our organizations. Take part in the meet-ing offered this Spring and our annual meetings offered this Fall with our outstanding speakers and industry partners. Take the time to also meet with your fellow members and instructors to sharpen and broaden your talents and skills. Talent is like a flower; you must tend to it if you want something beautiful. Skills, knowledge, abilities and experiences are only useful if you are at the right place. Don’t end up like the camel in the zoo. Put yourself in the right place this year. I’ll be there looking for you. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS ....................... AGpO Editor Jordan Balvich, DMD ........................
