In physics, momentum is the property or tendency of a moving object to continue moving. It also involves the force that keeps an object moving or an event develop-ing after it has started. So, to put it simply, momentum is when some-thing rolls down a hill gathering speed as it travels. We all want to get to the point of enjoying momentum, savoring the chance to relax and just coast down the hill. But we need to first look at what precedes momentum. You have to get to the top of the hill first. If running, you must take the time and effort to lean forward, shorten your stride and fight the terrain and incline before you can begin cruising back down. Momentum is when you are on a surfboard riding the crest of a wave in the ocean, as you’re gliding toward the shore. But first, you have to paddle out into the surf fighting the currents and probably getting dumped a few times before you can ride that Big Kahuna back to the beach. You get momentum when you are feeling confident about what you are doing and have a great self-belief. But before you become confi-dent in your abilities, you have to become competent in your abilities. Orthodontic momentum is the same as all other momentums. What precedes it is taking the necessary time and effort to get to the top of the hill or the crest of the wave. You have to become compe-tent in your abilities. The way to do this is to continue attending the courses and meetings that are avail-able through your organization during the year. Our Annual Meet-ing this fall is exactly the necessary venue to provide you with three days of momentum building by listening to our world-class lecturers and taking the opportunity to inter-act with many great instructors and mentors available through this marvelous organization. In addition to attending the annual meeting, reading this Journal and continuing your education will both build momentum and assist you in moving to the next level of training, while providing you with what you need to become compe-tent in your orthodontic skills. Take the time to begin building up your momentum by working toward achieving your Fellowship or Diplo-mate status at the spring meeting. There will be work, as well as time and effort, involved in making it to that height of tier advancement. But, as stated, after putting the effort into paddling out to that wave, you can ride the crest of it back to shore, confident in your abilities and proud of your achievement. Momentum is great, but don't forget what precedes it. We are all here to help you achieve it. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS .......................
