My wife and I have an energetic 1-year-old Wheaton Terrier named Izzy. One of Izzy's favorite things to do is to go for a two-to three-mile daily walk. But sometimes when I'm taking Izzy for a walk, I am not sure who is walking whom. I hold the leash and I decide which route we are taking, but Izzy insists on first stopping to check if her best buddy Zoe is outside. Then she will putter along at her own pace slowing me down as she sniffs whatever it is she wants to sniff and rolls over for a pat on her belly from every stranger she meets along the way. It's a constant wrestle for control and I'm not sure that I always win. Recently as I was walk-ing her and she was again trying to say “hi” to every passing dog and sniff every pile of rabbit poop, I thought about this battle in another context: Are you in control of your orthodontic practice? Do you have a plan you are working toward? Have you been keeping up with additional courses that can improve or help your orthodontic practice, or are you just floating along? Have you blocked out the time in your schedule to attend this year’s Annual Meeting? Have you decided to start the jour-ney toward tier advancement and board certification? Are you taking the time to read the articles and check through the case studies in this journal? Are you walking the dog or is the dog walking you? It's time to take control of the direction you and your orthodontics are headed. Taking risks, choosing growth and challenging yourself is important to taking charge of your journey. You can make a decision to take the action necessary to take charge of the important issues to your general office and orthodontic education. Our Annual Meeting this fall is exactly the necessary venue to provide you with three days of world-class lecturers and the oppor-tunity to talk with many of the great instructors and mentors available through our world-class organiza-tions. Also, the exhibit hall will give you an outstanding opportunity to speak with industry leaders about what is new and available to help your orthodontic care and office business move to the next level. In addition to our great Annual Meeting, check out the new courses that have been added so that you can make Early Treatment and Advanced Orthodontic Training part of the process of taking control of your orthodontic practice by taking the next step in your orthodontic education. You can continue to float along wondering why your treatment results are not better, or you can take the necessary steps to make ortho treatment an even larger, more satisfying and streamlined part of your practice. Instead of sniffing around courses outside of our group and being pulled from one pile of poop to the next, you can start taking control of "walking the dog." Start by making sure you are being productive by attending the best courses in the country, offered to you by AOS and AGpO, to keep you on top of your orthodontic training. I'll see you this fall!
