But this past Febru-ary, both basketball and the world of sports lost one of its great leaders with the passing of North Carolina head coach and legend Dean Smith. Coach Smith was 83 and was a universally respected figure in the basketball and sporting world. He nurtured the college careers of over 50 future NBA players, including superstars Michael Jordan and James Worthy. He was a great teacher and a leader who led his teams at North Carolina to two NCAA Championships, and when he retired he had won more games than any other Division 1 basket-ball coach in college history. But one of his most influential teachings during his coaching career was his introduction of pointing to the passer. By doing this, any player who scored a basket would acknowledge the teammate who gave them the ball. It's a habit that is now seen after almost every score, and it has been utilized in other sports as well. In his own words, Coach Smith said, "I do believe in praising that which deserves to be praised. I also believe that it is important to praise that which deserves to be praised." So think about who you need to acknowledge today? Who has helped you get where you are? When we talk about your becoming the best general or pediatric dentist who offers orthodontics to your patients, who helped you to get there? Who has coached and mentored you? For myself, Dr. Charles Yates first passed the ball to me 25 years ago. Since then, countless others have contin-ued to toss the ball to me and set me up to score. With the AGpO, Dr. Ron Austin and Dr. Roy Holexa have helped and allowed me the opportunity so I could "score a basket". With AOS, Dr. Chris Baker, Dr. Len Carapezza and Dr. Juan Echeverri have given me chances to take the ball from them and drop it in for a score. Think about who has given you opportunities to shine with orthodontics. Both of our organiza-tions continue to assist you to achieve your goals. This year, the Annual Meetings, Spring Refreshers and Board Reviews will offer you everything you need to move forward in tier advancement and improve your orthodontic knowledge. There are many opportunities for you to reach your goals and many great instructors and coaches to assist you. Take the time to point to them, acknowledge them and thank them. And then find a way to assist others to achieve their goals as well.
