ORTHO INDUSTRY NEWS Antibacterial Bracket Cement Developed Acids from biofilm accumulation are caused by demineralized lesions in enamel around orthodontic brackets, according to a study of the American Association for Dental Research. The study aimed to develop antibacterial orthodontic bracket cement by incor-porating a quaternary ammonium monomer dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM) and to investigate the effects on dental plaque microcosm biofilm response and enamel bond strength. According to the study, DMADDM with an alkyl chain length of 12 was synthesized and incorporated into the cement at mass fractions of 0%, 1.5%, and 3%. Orthodontic cement Trans-bond XT served as the control. Shear bond strength of metal brackets to human enamel was measured, and cement remnant index scores were determined after bracket failure. A plaque microcosm biofilm model with human saliva as inoculum was used to measure metabolic activity, lactic acid production, and colony-forming units for biofilms on orthodontic cements. The findings revealed that incorpo-rating DMADDM into orthodontic cement did not affect the shear bond strength (13.1 to 14.6 MPa; p = 0.09). Dental plaque microcosm biofilm viabil-ity was substantially inhibited when in contact with cement disks containing DMADDM. The new orthodontic adhe-sive reduced biofilm metabolic activity by up to 66% and lactic acid by 78% (p < 0.05). Biofilm total microorganisms were reduced by up to 88%, total strep-tococci by 96%, and mutans strepto-cocci by 98% (p < 0.05). Increasing DMADDM mass frac-tion increased the antibacterial potency. Orthodontic cement containing 3% DMADDM was the most strongly antibacterial. These results show that the DMADDM-containing orthodontic cement inhibited biofilms and lactic acid without compromising the enamel bond strength, and hence may be promising to reduce or eliminate demineralization in enamel around orthodontic brackets. 8 Spring 2014 JAOS Radiographic Stent Material Now Available in Square Biocryl Form-X CT radiographic stent mate-rial is now available in 2mm/125mm square for use with vacuum machines. This uniform radiopaque material simplifies the stent fabri-cation and provides crys-tal clear scans and defined tooth shapes without using barium. Form-X adapts to a replica of the diagnostic wax-up model or directly to a composite mock-up. Once thermal-formed and trimmed, the appliance is inserted in the patient’s mouth and a CT scan is taken. Form-X conforms within the planned prosthesis for opti-mal restorative outcome. Form-X is also avail-able in 2mm/125mm round for use with Biostar® and MiniSTAR ® thermal-forming machines. Infection Control Hotline; Free and Staffed by Clinicians Crosstex International, Inc., a recognized leader in infection prevention and control prod-ucts and services like face masks, bibs, and gloves, is proud to announce the launch of 8558-STERILE, a new toll-free Infection Control helpline. The Infection Control helpline was estab-lished after several infection control breaches made top news headlines in the dental sector. This spotlight on infection control protocol had many practices reviewing their proce-dures and also turning to manufacturers to ensure they understood product IFUs (Instruc-tions for Use) and the frequency required to meet physical, chemical and biological moni-toring CDC compliance guidelines. In response to these questions, Crosstex established a dedicated Helpline that is answered only by clinicians. Control Helpline at 8558-STERILE, (855) 878-3745. Monday -Friday, 8am to 5pm MST and let Crosstex assist with infection control product and process inquiries.
