AGpO MEMBERSHIP NEWS Novel Techniques and Common Goals Kyle McCrea, DDS AGpO President This past March, the AGpO held its annual Spring Refresher jointly with the International Association of Orthodontics. This year’s joint meeting met in Orlando Florida at the Gaylord Palms Resort. The resort was a beautiful location for continuing education especially after the long cold winter so many of us had endured. The IAO’s meetings always bring together several schools of thought involving orthodontic treatment. This meeting gives us a great opportunity to visit with other practitioners and discuss the common challenges we all have. We had some fantastic speakers for the Tip-Edgers in attendance. Dr. Jack L. Pechersky from Pittsburg spoke to us on the topic of Interceptive Orthodontics. He addressed issues we are faced with when very young patients present with problems we know will affect their growth, development and health. One of the topics discussed in detail involved anomalies in the eruption of permanent teeth and how to treat these conditions. This topic was of interest to all of us, as we are faced with these decisions on a daily basis in our practice. In addi-tion Dr. Pechersky’s discussion of space maintenance based on physiological age was a great addition to our armamentarium for early treatment. Our special guest presenter was Dr. Kuniaki Miyajima. Dr. Miyajima is the president of the Academy of Gp Orthodontics in Japan. He presented some novel tech-niques that many of us have only marginal knowledge about. He discussed how the use of TADs can make cases where you did not have the opportunity to treat the patient at the ideal age, more manageable and still finish with better results. He showed how being able to move entire arches as a single unit, can shorten treatment time with very precise results. Dr. Miyajima also introduced using corticotomy to facilitate orthodontic treatment. It was interesting to hear about these techniques combined with the Differential Straight-Arch Technique. The Academy has once again put together an educational and entertaining program. Hope to see you all in Colorado! Kyle McCrea Three Day Assistant Course This Summer Dr. Charles Young will again be teaching the Academy’s three-day assistant course in Plano, TX this summer. The Texas course will run from July 31 to August 3, 2014. The course is intended for assistants with little orthodontic training as well as a refresher course for more experienced assis-tants. The course will give the chair side assistant a better under-standing of orthodontics and the Differential Straight Arch (Tip-Edge) Technique. Assistants will be working in pairs on study casts from your office along with typodonts from the Academy. Assistants will learn how to apply brackets, bands and auxiliaries using the Tip-Edge System. Dr. Young will cover the Tip-Edge stages of treatment, trac-ing of cephalometric x-rays and model analysis for the diagnosis of arch length discrepancy. The Academy will supply a T.P. Orthodontics supply kit, which includes bracket kits, a straight shooter and a carousel dispenser (a value of over $300 for these items alone, which you take home). A list of additional supplies needed from your office will be sent with course confirma-tion. Call the Academy at 1-800-634-2027 to reserve your space for this very popular yearly course. www.orthodontics.com Spring 2014 43
