During his stay, we took a trip to downtown Chicago to the Field Museum of Natural History. Besides housing hundreds of exhibits, the Field Museum is also home to Sue the dinosaur. Sue is the nickname given to the largest most extensive and best preserved Tyrannosaurs Rex speci-men ever found. My nephew loves dinosaurs from the terrifying T-Rex to the massive Stegosaurus. He loves having dinosaur books read to him and learning all he can about them. He is fascinated by all sorts of dinosaurs and he often has all sorts of questions about dinosaurs. His favorite question to ask was, “Why did dinosaurs become extinct?” Rather than answer-ing with the basic “Because of a meteor”, my response was more along the lines of “Because they couldn’t adapt and were unable to cope with changing conditions as effectively as other species”. Sound familiar? I’ve come across a lot of people over the years, especially dentists, who have become dinosaurs. In an ever evolving dental environ-ment with constantly changing tech-nologies and materials too many people choose to or are unable to adapt and change. Their skills have become redundant. Their knowledge is irrele-vant. They have become cumbersome and difficult to relate to and too often their attitude is that all of this is some-one else’s fault. It was Muhammad Ali who said, “The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of life.” So don’t become a dinosaur. Keep updating your skills, keep learning and growing. Stay aware of what is happening in your profes-sion. Evolve. Use all the resources our organizations and this Journal have available to stay up to date and competitive in orthodontics. One of the best ways to do that is with the many courses offered through the AOS and AGpO to hone and update your orthodontic skills. This spring you will find some new courses and refresher meetings available to help you with updating those skills and moving forward with tier advancement. It’s important to keep learning and grow-ing and to stay aware of what’s happening in orthodontics, dentistry and the wider world that affects your practice. Take responsibility for this by making sure to keep up with and read through this journal, attend one of the many classes, refreshers and annual meetings made available to you. The world and dentistry are changing and both will wait for no one. Dinosaurs are extinct because of their inability to adapt. Make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
