AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Grow Your Confidence and Practice Each and Every Day Michael J. Newman, DDS AOS President It is with honor and with a great sense of responsibility to all AOS members that I assumed the title of American Orthodontic Society President at our Annual Meeting in Chicago in August. This journey started with my first AOS course, Bob Gerety’s Compre-hensive in 2003, and has led to the top lead-ership position of this great organization in 2013. That is a” long way to go and a short time to get there”, to quote a country song. The orthodontic knowledge I’ve gained from my AOS courses, combined with the confi-dence instilled by Bob Gerety, Bill Wyatt, and many other instructors, that quality orthodontic treatment can be provided by general and pediatric dentists, and the support and encouragement of colleagues led me to attain Diplomate status in 2008, has changed my practice, my life, and the lives of many, many patients who have benefited from that knowledge as well. My practice has grown with orthodontics, but in the recent economic environments we have seen, growth doesn’t come easily, and constant change and adaptation is required. The AOS has continually been there for me, supporting my practice with member services and providing mentors and quality instructors to further my knowledge and enhance my professional growth. As I lead the greatest orthodontic educa-tional organization in America this coming year, I have two goals. First, to ensure that the AOS is financially strong enough to lead in orthodontic education for another 35 years, and Second, to encourage and mentor as many of my new colleagues as possibly can. The Board of Directors that I lead is an inspiring, multi-talented collection of practi-tioners that totally appreciate the AOS and the education it provides. I urge each of you to “tap into” the great talent that surrounds you in the AOS and grow your confidence and practice each and every day. Our next Annual Meeting will be in Denver, Colorado next August 7-10. Plan now to attend, and bring a new colleague, and catch the spirit that is the American Orthodontic Society! Michael J.
