AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Bigger, Better & Stronger: Let’s Keep It Up What a wonderful year this has been. As my term as presi-dent of the AOS draws to a close, Chris Baker, RN, DMD I reflect on some of the great AOS President steps your organization has taken these 12 months. We are bigger, better and stronger than ever before – both individually and collectively. We have met new challenges and seen monumental advances. The first-ever AOS international comprehensive orthodontics course began in Dubai, and the first course using tablet computer technology was taught, with each doctor in the course using an iPad. We have grown exponentially in membership and had the greatest course income year ever, with more course offerings than ever before. Dr. David Jackson’s course atten-dance in Dallas, TX has been astounding, and Dr. Ed Gonzales and Dr. Len Carapezza have expanded the teach-ings in pedo-ortho. Plans are underway for Dr. Baccetti, an international researcher in orthodontics, to join Dr. Cara-pezza to teach in 2012. Dr. Joe Schmidbauer graciously continued our longtime AOS presence in Atlanta. I cannot imagine our organization and my teaching being so success-ful without the help and the hard work of some very special people: to Tom Chapman and his staff and to my husband, Claude Hammond, I say WOW! And so I close with other’s great parting words: “That’s all folks.” (Bugs Bunny) “I shall return.” (Douglas MacArthur) “Thanks for the memories.” (Bob Hope) “Good night Gracie.” (George Burns) “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” (Little Orphan Annie) “I’m back in the saddle again.” (Gene Autry) “On the road again.” (Willie Nelson) “Be well, do good work and keep in touch.” (Garrison Keeler) “The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected. (Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook) “A man never knows how to say goodbye, a woman never knows when to say it.” (Helen Rowland) “The best things come last. People will talk for hours saying noth-ing and then linger at the door with words that come with a rush from the heart.” (Alan Alda) “You may all go to hell and I will go to Texas.” (Davy Crockett) “Don’t cry because it’s over – smile because it happened.” (Dr. Seuss) “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” (Helen Keller) “Here’s a wish and a prayer; may all your dreams come true.” (Lawrence Welk) “Happy trails to you, until we meet again. Some trails are happy ones, Others are blue. It’s the way you ride the trail that counts. Here’s a happy one for you” (Roy Rogers and Dale Evans) Chris Baker, RN, DMD Dr. Ed Gonzalez [above] with his “Early Treatment for the Pedi-atric & General Dentist” class in Orlando, FL in August. Attendees included the entire University of Florida Pediatric current residents and the President of the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr Gonzalez, senior instructor and newly appointed Executive Director of the AOS Academy of Diplomates has successfully conducted this course twice in 2011. Be watching our website and your mailbox for future courses from Dr. Gonzalez. Dr. Jerry Swee, pediatric resident at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, is the 2011 recipient of the AOS Academic Scholarship presented annually by the American Orthodontic Society Foundation. Dr. Jeff Ahlin, AOS past-president presented the scholarship during cere-monies on campus. The work of the AOS Foundation only succeeds because of the generosity of our members. If you are interested in participating in the scholarship program please contact AOS Executive Director, Tom Chapman at (800) 448-1601. www.orthodontics.com September/October 2011 45
