AGpO MEMBERSHIP NEWS AGpO Offers Plenty of Continuing Dental Education It has been an enjoyable and humbling experience serving as your president for the past year. Enjoyable in that my presidency has been remarkably unevent-ful, thanks to Adam Griswold and his staff. They are routinely handling the day-to-day issues behind the scenes, and at the same time planning the transition to bring our academy into the technological future. Humbling in that I have seen what energy goes into running this organization. I’m realizing that the presi-dent is just a small spoke in a very large wheel. I have beaten the drum incessantly in these pages for all doctors to get more orthodontic continuing education. Orthodontics is a complex business; constant reinforcement is necessary for us to bring the best care to our patients. As general practitioners performing orthodontic treatment, we are under the spotlight and are held to the same standards as a specialist. Let’s make sure we’re bringing our A-game to each and every patient by getting annual CE. And the best place to do that is at our refresher courses and Annual Meeting. AGPO’s incoming president, Sam Gutovitz, is an experienced hand. He has served as our president Tom Jacobsen, DDS before and is kindly returning for AGpO President a second engagement. And I would encourage our newer members to consider a term on our Board of Directors, then getting into the queue for the presidency. Also consider reaching your Fellow and Diplomate status in our great organization. This is the only way our great organization will continue to flourish with the partici-pation of our great members. I’ll be stepping down as your president, but will still be active in the Academy. In particular, I hope to be able to contribute time to the Cynthia Bordelon Scholarship program. In my mind, this is one of the finest endeavors our Academy can sponsor. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at our Atlanta joint meeting with the AOS. Take care, Tom Jacobsen, DDS 2011 Assistant’s Course Graduates 21 Students The Academy held its 2011 Assistant’s Course with instructor Dr. Charles Young at the Legacy Towne Center in Plano, TX on August 4–7. Twenty-one assistants and three doctors attended this intensive four-day course which included orthodontic staff train-ing with an optional half-day session on Sunday covering patient photography, taught by AGPO Presi-dent Dr. Tom Jacobsen. www.orthodontics.com September/October 2011 43
