AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Committed To Continuing Education & Networking Jordan J. Balvich, DMD, FAGD, DAOS AOS President The quality of an association’s annual meeting speaks volumes about that association’s commit-ment to membership, both to their professional needs as well as their wants. Ignore either and that meeting will fail. Our volunteer leadership and our professional staff work hard to ask questions, talk to you and watch industry and practice trends in order to build an annual meeting that is packed with immediate “takeaways” that are fresh and topi-cal, and most importantly, renews your energy and commit-ment to the practice of orthodontics. We’ve designed this year’s AOS Annual Meeting with YOU in mind. Speakers include orthodontists, general practitioners, pediatric dentists, Olympians, motivational speakers, highly qualified dental assistants and practice management special-ists. An impressive array of speakers await you in Houston. Priced lower than most weekend single speaker seminars, we offer you up to 25 hours of ADA-accepted continuing educa-tion, a dozen clinicians and speakers, a Saturday night awards dinner, and continental breakfast and lunch each day included in the price. Every member should be logging onto 2010 Tufts Scholarship Winners The AOS Foundation Scholarship at Tufts University is offered each year to talented pediatric residents who have demonstrated outstanding skills and a keen interest in orthodontics. In a dinner ceremony on the Tufts campus June 24th, Dr. Jeff Ahlin, AOS past president, presented this year’s scholarship to Dr. Arash Goli and Dr. Tae Rim Yoon. Born in Korea, Dr. Yoon is a citizen of Canada and a graduate of Tufts University. Dr. Goli attended the Shahid Beheshti School of Dental Medicine in his native Iran and then Nova Southeastern Univer-sity in Ft. Lauderdale before starting the post-graduate program at Tufts. Congratulations to both recipients! The AOS Foundation Scholarship at Tufts has awarded $12,000 to deserving applicants since its inception in 2007. The AOS Charitable Foundation provides educational grants only through the generous support of our members. If you would like to know more about our scholarship program or assist by pledging funds, please contact our Executive Director, Tom Chapman, at (800) 448-1601 or tchapman@orthodontics.com. our website at www.orthodontics.com or calling our office at (800) 448-1601 and registering TODAY! This will be my last column as President of the finest professional society in the US. I have been honored to serve our membership and I especially want to thank the men and women of the AOS Board of Directors. They work hard for you and they supported me with commitment and friendship. We have accomplished much as an association this past year, but there is still much to do to reach the summit of our “mountain top”. Our membership has increased 5 percent over last year; our website has been totally overhauled making it a strong tool for membership; our extended educational programs have expanded to seven metropolitan areas. We now offer our educational journal in state-of-the-art digital format on the Internet, and a social/professional media platform is just around the corner. And these are only the highlights! As I turn the presidential gavel over to Dr. Chris Baker for the coming year, I do so knowing that the torch of leadership passes to one of the most outstanding clinicians, teachers, practitioners, and, humanitarian spirits that has ever served this Society. See you in Houston! Jordan Balvich, DMD, FAGD, DAOS Dr. Carapezza at Brehm Lecture On Friday, May 21, 2010, Dr. Leonard J. Carapezza, AOS Diplomate and senior instructor and Associate Clinical Professor, Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, spoke in conjunction with the Dr. Waldemar Brehm Continuing Education Lectureship at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. His lecture topic was “The World of the Growing Child: New Paradigms in the Early Treatment of Malocclusion.” Established in 2008, The Dr. Waldemar Brehm Continuing Education Lectureship of the Early Treatment of Malocclusion in Pedi-atric Dentistry Endowed Fund pays tribute to the late Dr. Brehm and his legacy at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Brehm taught thousands of general practice and pediatric dentists across the US and around the world. Known for his bound-less energy and long tedious hours spent bending wires with his students late into the evening, Dr. Brehm’s dream was to help every student become the best practitioner they could be. www.orthodontics.com September/October 2010 49
