We see it in the shorter days and the changing colors of the trees and plants around us. As food sources start to become more scarce, many animals begin to quickly put on weight as they prepare for their hibernation. One of these animals is the great Grizzly Bear of North America. Luckily, for these great beasts, this period of rapid weight gain coincides with the migration season for salmon, which travel upstream to spawn before dying. A famous well-known image we all have seen of these great bears involves their sitting in the middle of a river catching salmon with nothing but their paws and teeth. Watching these big bruins going about their business catching their dinner brings to light a few simple principles that we can learn from the grizzly’s fishing habits. You’ve Got To Get Into The River Grizzlies don’t stand on the banks afraid to get their paws wet. They jump right into the water where the action is. Life’s like that for us too. We can’t be successful if we’re too afraid to get wet. We have to go where the opportunities are because they won’t just jump into our laps. That means attending the Annual Meetings and Spring courses offered to you through the AOS and AGpO every year. In 2014, jump in and get your feet wet. Check out the new courses being offered and all that the entire Journal has avail-able for you in each issue. Make sure to check out the speakers at this year’s meetings and all the new courses available to you. You’ve Got To Be Alert When Grizzlies get in to the water, they are fully alert, constantly looking for opportunities to find their next meal and valuable protein fix. They know that there is time to hibernate later; this is the time to be fully focused on the moment. The vendor’s floor at our annual meetings gives you a great opportunity to stay focused on opportunities for your practice so that you can find that soft-ware, imaging unit, finance partner or equipment that will bring you to the next level. If you’re aware enough you will see that there are opportu-nities to grow your business, improve your network and upgrade your skills available to you through out the year make sure to grab them. Don’t Worry About The One You Missed Grizzlies don’t catch every fish they ambush, but when they miss one, they just let it go and focus on catching the next salmon. It’s a reminder that not everything we try will work. Patients won’t cooperate one hundred percent one hundred percent of the time. Wires will break, brackets will debond and some patients will resist your constant encourag-ing and reminding to improve their oral hygiene. Don’t look back and only concentrate on that one that got away, the one who did not follow instructions. Instead, look ahead to the next opportunities and what you learned and were able to take away from that less than perfect case. Use the senior instructors to help you with the speed bumps you may hit with one of your cases. Attend the Annual Review Course this February 21-22. The Academy of Diplomates Mid-Winter Meeting and Orthodontic Review Course is designed to help in advancing yourself by striving to reach board eligible or Diplomate status. Analyzing and recognizing problems as they occur with the help of your Academy of Diplomates will bring you closer to reaching your next step in tier advancement. Have a wonderful holiday season and a glori-ous start to 2014. And, keep looking ahead to the next opportunity.
