Some though sit on the sidelines unable to take those first steps towards something they know will make their office more productive because they look at the training they will need as a huge mountain they must scale to reach its peak. I always try to share with them that scaling a moun-tain is not difficult or impossible if you just approach it the proper way. As it was once explained to me, when you decide to scale Mount Ever-est, you don’t just buy a plane ticket to Nepal and casually run up to the summit. If you do, you will fail. Before you can climb Mount Everest, there are a few things you need to do: í Practice on smaller peaks first and conquer them. í Train continuously and relentlessly until your skills are world class. í Get yourself a support team to help you on your way. í Find mentors who have been there before you. í Create a strategy for climbing the mountain. í Stay focused when things go wrong. If you want to climb Everest, you need to understand that this will take years to achieve, but it’s worth it if you want to stand on the top of the world. Now replace climbing Everest with learning, becoming proficient, staying current and advancing in orthodontics. í Practice on smaller goals. Start with simpler cases. Begin a case as you continue through your training with the numerous courses offered to you through our great instructors. This way there is some one available to help with questions. í Train continuously through this Jour-nal, our annual meeting, society credentialing and the great courses taught by our instructors. You can hone your skills to make your climb to orthodontic excellence happen for you. í Get a mentor. Your teachers, lecturers, senior instructors and academy of diplomats are available to guide you through your journey up the moun-tain. They have been there before. í Execute an effective strategy. All your mentors and support team are available to help you find firm solid footing as you make your way up the mountain. í Stay focused. Things don’t always go right. Patients can be non-compliant or uncooperative. Teeth can over rotate, bites can over correct. Know how to avoid problems and correct them when they happen by staying focused. No one can expect to achieve great-ness in a matter of moments. If it was possible, then it wouldn’t be greatness. But if you prepare yourself properly and do the work, you’ll be able to tackle the mountain out in front of you. Once you get to the pinnacle, the view is spectacu-lar. See you at the top.
