With this issue, we are taking a look at palatal arch development and malocclusion from a slightly different perspective. Steve Jobs, at his famous commence-ment speech at Stanford in 2005, said that, “You cannot connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward.” So we are going to take a little differ-ent view at the issues of palatal arch development and maloc-clusion by looking backward to the beginning. First, we will look back at the beginning of each of our lives by looking at the importance of breastfeed-ing to the development of the palatal arch and malocclusion. Then, we will look even further back, over 160,000 years, at an evolutionary perspective on the etiology of malocclusion. As Wayne Dyer said, “Progress and growth are impossible if you always do things the way you’ve always done things.” So, by going back and connecting the dots, we get a new perspective on our oral development in infancy and then back to our oral development as a species. Learning is exploring the “connecting of the dots”, as to the etiology of malocclusion will help us with understand-ing why a patient may present to our office with crowding, large overjets, vaulted palates and anterior and posterior crossbites. Understanding the origins of malocclusion can help in diagnosis and treat-ment. Evolutionary medicine is relatively new, so we are exploring an area where there is no path and leaving a trail.
