He looked at one of Raphael’s early drawings. He then picked up a piece of chalk and wrote the word “Amphlius” across the drawing. Amphlius means greater or larger and it is the root of the English word ample. Raphael’s plan was too cramped and narrow. Michelangelo was imploring Raphael to be more ambitious with his work, to think bigger, to be more audacious. Amphlius is to be greater, larger. His artist’s eye saw greatness and depth where Raphael had held back. Michelangelo was not rejecting the work for it showed great skill and was good as far as it went. But the small size of the canvas had made it appear cramped. It needed to be expanded. What if the word was written across our great works of orthodontics? Has our treatment become cramped? Is it time for us to expand our skills, knowl-edge and move forward with tier advancement? Is it time to stop holding back, to think less narrow? As general dentists and pedodontists who provide orthodontics for our patients, we have both an opportunity and responsibility to select from our practice those patients who need orthodontic care that our experience, knowledge and expertise will allow us to treat with a favorable outcome. Both the AGpO and the AOS provide their membership with orthodontic courses, meetings and curriculums given by certified instructors who are willing to share their accumulated experience, knowledge and expertise. This can make the patient selection process easier for the novice and more stream-lined for the experienced doctor. In this issue of the Journal, Dr. Carapezza’s article looks at the Class III malocclusion with that in mind. Expand your knowledge with his arti-cle. Dr. Wilkerson presents to us his Dual Arch Technique. This technique enhances growth and dental develop-ment so that they both can proceed as nature intended, without interfer-ence or alteration. It is important for a child to grow up with a well balanced and attractive face, straight teeth, a beautiful smile and healthy jaw joints. Expand your “canvas” by learning the benefits of early orthodontic treatment from both Dr. Carapezza and Dr. Wilkerson. Both of our organizations continu-ously provide you with what you need so that the word amplius will describe your orthodontic practice and treatment. The skills you need to be greater and larger with your orthodontic treatment are presented to you in both this Journal and through the courses and instructors of our organizations as well as at our annual meeting. Raphael took on Michelangelo’s challenge and became a truly great and influential artist in his own right. Take up the challenge, make your orthodontic treatment greater and larger than ever before ADVERTISER INDEX Academy of Gp Orthodontics ............41 American Orthodontic Society ..................3 DentaGard ..........................................8 Dolphin Imaging Systems ..................47 Great Lakes Orthdontics, LTD ..............2 Johns Dental Labs ........................34, 35 Ordont Ortho Labs ..............................9 Ortho Arch Co. ..................................46 Ortho Organizers ..............................13 OrthoPlusSeminars ............................48 RMO, Inc. ............................................4 Smile TRU ..........................................29 6 March/April 2013 JAOS
