AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Strong AOS Leadership Continues Nearly a year ago in this same column following our Annual Meeting in Memphis, I told our member-ship what an honor it was for me to carry the title of President of the American Orthodontic Society for the coming year! Clearly, it is the capstone of my career to this point. During the past year, we have become stronger advocates for our general and pedi-atric members than ever before. By direction of the board and under the leadership of Dr. Chris Baker, our advocacy efforts are making a difference. Actively involved with the Academy of General Dentistry, the AOS has accompanied the AGD delega-tion for four consecutive years to Capitol Hill repre-senting YOUR interests. From difficult Affordable Care Act issues to burgeoning student debt that threatens the future of dentistry, we talked each issue with your state representatives and Senate staffs. At the state level, we have been advisors in Texas’ efforts to re-write advertising rules, and for the past year, we sat on the Health and Human Services Medi-caid Dental Working Group. Dr. Baker even testified before the Texas House Committee on Health Policy, helping lawmakers understand why general dentist’s scope of practice should not be legislated. Recently, the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry sought AOS input on a difficult Medicaid issue facing that state. Juan J. Solano, DDS When I turn the president’s AOS President gavel over to Dr. Mike Newman, your next president, I do it knowing that we are better today than we were a year ago. For that, I am blessed because of a strong, involved Board of Directors and committed professional staff in Dallas. By the time you read this, we will be on the eve of our Annual Meeting in Chicago. I hope your plans bring you to one of the world’s great cities and to one of the nation’s great dental programs. My Dominican Republic roots give me a passion for life and profes-sion. My pride runs a little deeper and my passion a little stronger after serving you for the past year. Adios, Juan J. Solano, DDS www.orthodontics.com July/August 2013 53
