ORTHOBITES TWIN FORCE BITE CORRECTOR By David Jackson, DDS, FAGD, IBO F or the past several years, I have been employing the Twin Force Bite Corrector (Ortho Organiz-ers). I have found it to be an excellent Mandibular repositioning/Maxillary distaliza-tion appliance (Figs. 1-3). Although I have employed the Multi Distalizing Arch Appliance (MDA) very successfully and I still use this appliance routinely, the Twin Force offers one component that the MDA fails to meet, that is the removal of patient compliance. My decision to employ the Twin Force appliance occures when a patient presents with a jaw relation-ship that involves a prognathic maxilla and a retrog-nathic mandible with a half to full step dental Class II molar occlusion. The purpose of the Twin Force Appliance is to repo-sition the mandible in an anterior position thus correcting the retruded-retrognathic mandible. It is placed when the patient is in a minimum .019 x .025 stainless steel arch wire and it is retained in the mouth for approximately 8-12 months. The components of the Twin Force Bite Corrector are arch wire clamps, ball and socket joints, and a sliding union (Fig. 4). The appliance is like a shock absorber on an automobile. Figs. 5 and 6 show the appliance fully extended and fully compressed. With a Twin Force Bite Corrector one attains Fig. 2 Fig. 3 Fig. 1 20 July/August 2013 JAOS Orthopedic (Skeletal) movement or reshaping of the bone). It is a Class II mandibular repositioning appli-ance that stimulates bone growth causing the mandible to become longer and to reposture the mandible causing forward positioning and creating a gap between the condyle and fossa. The condyle and fossa will then remodel and new bone will develop.
