EDITOR’S WELCOME Greg Cannizzo, DDS, CDE, JAOS Editor 3617 Municipal Drive, McHenry, IL 60050 Phone: (815) 344-2282 • Fax: (815) 344-5815 Email: drgrc@joltmail.com Traditionally owls are considered to be the wisest of all birds. In ancient Greece, owls were associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom. She was thought to be accompanied by one at all times. Unlike most birds owl eyes are found on the front of their heads, versus on the sides, to help them focus on the prey they are hunting. Thus their eyes give the impression of intelligence and they have often been depicted in stories as wise and knowledgeable. Personally, I think that they are magnificent animals and there are few more impressive sights than an owl in its natural habitat. Now owls may not be really wise from an IQ perspective, but there are a few principals of wisdom that we can learn from them and their amaz-ingly sharp senses. SIT AND WAIT: Owls are rarely flus-tered and rarely rushed they sit on their perch and take their time. In our world full of endless activity and distractions, being able to sit quietly is a lost art. You can’t think strategically if you never stop. TAKE NOTICE: Owls may sit and wait but they don’t just sit still; they are constantly aware of their environment and are always looking and listening. They have extraordinary eye sight and hearing and use these strengths to find small rodents hiding in thick cover that we would never notice. The smallest movement or the slightest sound comes to their attention because they are always on the lookout for opportunities. ACT: After sitting still and taking notice, when an owl sees its prey it launches into action swooping down quietly to grab its meal. Like an owl, take some time to stop, sit and take notice. This fall, you will have an opportunity with the Annual Meet-ings of the AOS and AGpO to stop take a breath and enjoy a chance to sit, slow down and get your creative juices flow-ing. Take this time to learn and lay out a strategy for your office with the help of lectures, friends and orthodontic industry partners. It’s important to be on the look out for opportunities and pearls. Focus your senses on finding the right solu-tions. Take the time to talk with industry partners at the Exhibit Hall. Find the right person to help you reach your goal. “To know more, notice more”. Use this issue’s Buyer’s Guide as well as the new interactive service, Map Your Show, to plan your schedule during the meeting and pre-visit the exhibit hall months ahead of the show. This will enable you to get to know our exhibitors, request information from them in advance, and even reach out to schedule an appointment before seeing them on the show floor. Then act. The owl is a great reminder for us that ideas without action are irrelevant. Life rewards actions don’t forget to get going when you notice an opportu-nity to utilize your skills. Too often we spend our time at the office in a state of “go, go, go, go, stop”. We are more effec-tive when we “stop and then go, go, go, go”. Use your time at the Annual Meet-ing to stop pick up some pearls, attend a lecture, talk with colleagues then recharge, return home and go, go, go. If you don’t, you may just end up hungry.
