As the year begins and we come closer to our upcoming annual meeting in Chicago this August, it’s a time to reflect on today. From one of my youngest son’s favorite movies, Kung Fu Panda, comes the quote, “Yesterday is history, tomor-row is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it’s called the present.” The origins of the quote are attributed to both former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the Ameri-can cartoonist Bill Keane, still it’s a great reminder to us as we start this New Year. It’s a reminder that today is a gift given to each of us to do amazing work, have fun and spend time with those we love as we further grow and develop. As 2013 unfolds, make sure you open each day. Each day of the year is a gift that you are invited to take out and play with. You have the opportu-nity to tear the wrapping paper off with gusto. Notice the opportunities around you and make it a year of remarkable achievements. With your continual practice of orthodontics, you have a gift to open with gusto this year as our combined Annual Meeting will take place in August at the Inter-continental Hotel in Chicago. You will have a chance to showcase your amazing work, have fun and spend time with those you love to talk and meet with as we all grow and develop our orthodontic skills and practice. The Annual Meeting can be that mid-year boost to bring you through a year of remarkable achievements. Sometimes when working toward those achievements, we allow little mistakes to sidetrack us from our endeavors. The American author Edwin Louis Cole once said, “You don’t drown by falling in the water, you drown by staying there.” It’s not our problems that defeat us; it’s our inability to come up with resourceful solutions to them. Keep your head above water and keep swimming. Both of our great organizations as well as this Journal are here to provide you with solutions as well as ways to make it through difficult ortho challenges you might run into. Use the great resources provided to you by the outstand-ing, teachers, instructors, industry partners, courses and meetings to bring you to the surface and get you out of the water dripping wet and smiling.
