Sara is a 10-year-old who is on Medicaid and Dr. Ron Austin had protested twice on her behalf only to have her be turned down both times for Oklahoma Orthodontic Medicaid Assistance. Unfortunately, Oklahoma Medi-caid only approves patients who display 10mm overjets, or ante-rior crossbites, or deep overbites that impinge on palatal tissue along with cleft palate patients. Dr. Austin thought her deep bite was enough for her to qualify for state assistance but Oklahoma was not in agreement. Sara’s mom Connie had explained that her daughter, at age 10, was becoming aware of her looks and had begun to cover her smile with her hand so other kids could not see her teeth. Her father’s chronic heart disease and mom’s disabilities resulted in the families’ finances being very limited. The mother felt that if Sara had orthodontic treatment, her confi-dence in herself would grow. Dr. Austin matched Sara’s AGpO scholarship aid of $1,900 by contributing $1,000 toward Sara’s $4,400 treatment fee. Sara’s dad had insurance coverage with Wal-Mart and that coverage covered all but $220, which the family paid out-of-pocket. Sara’s orthodontic treatment commenced in Novem-ber 2011.
