As 2011 begins, so does the eleventh year of your Journal of the American Orthodontic Society. For 10 years, we have put together a Journal that gives you the best in general practice and pediatric orthodontics as well as what’s new and exciting in the industry and with our organizations. I hope everyone realizes how lucky we all are for the friendships we have made through our association with the AOS and AGpO. This year, the AOS and AGpO will once again combine our annual meeting giving us another opportunity for continuing educa-tion and a chance to rekindle and create new and lasting friendships. The Grand Hyatt Atlanta Buckhead will be the site for this September event. So as we begin 2011 and look forward to our meeting in Atlanta, I would like to share with you and expand on a great tale I have written on before called The Goose Story. Let’s begin by imaging geese heading south for the winter, flying along in a V formation. Consider what science has discov-ered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. All of us associated with AOS and AGpO share a common direction and vision. We want to improve the profession of dentistry and the quality of care we provide our patients. We all know the importance of orthodontics in a general and pediatric prac-tice and how vital this care and all it encom-passes is to the quality of care we provide our patients. We are a group moving towards a goal and, as a group; we are more powerful and have a greater affect on those listening to our message of general practice orthodontics. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are trav-eling on the uplift of one another. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. When we come together by reading this journal or as part of our joint annual meeting this fall, we are given a chance to take advantage of the help and informa-tion from everyone else who are headed in the same direction and trying to achieve the same outstanding results for their patients. These annual meetings give us the opportu-nity to come together as a group. This gives us lifting power and assists us in soaring forward. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies the point. Our organizations are blessed with talented people who step forward to give help and guide our groups toward our mission and goals. In order for us to continue on the great course we have traveled we will continue to need talented people to participate at our annual meetings and volunteer for board posi-tions. It pays to take turns doing the difficult job of leading our organizations. Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. I always appreciate the support I get from all of you concerning the Journal. Don’t forget to honk at the others who keep our great organizations going on a daily basis, such as, the executive directors and all the people who work in our offices and teach our courses just to name a few. And don’t forget that an encouraging word goes a long way. Finally, when a goose gets sick or is wounded by a gunshot and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead, then they launch out on their own with another formation to catch up with the group. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other much like geese do when one of their group falls behind. Being part of AOS and AGpO is being part of the “family” of general and pediatric dentists who provide orthodontics for our patients. Staying together as a family and flying in a supporting group will allow us to stay strong. So this fall, fly south with us to Atlanta, GA. I’ll be there flying in formation…HONK HONK!
