ORTHO INDUSTRY NEWS Smiles Across America Program Help Children in Need Oral Health America recently shared that the organization’s members have sealed 2,000,000 teeth on at-risk children across the country. Dental sealants placed on children’s teeth in school-based setting is one of only two evidenced-based public health best practices directly focused on oral health. Children receiving preven-tive care in school-based settings have an improved opportunity for overall health and success in school. Oral Health America's Smiles Across America ® program provided more than 460,000 chil-dren in 47 states with services including dental sealants, fluoride varnish and family education. Oral Health America encourages collaborative learning among its Smiles Across America® Program partners across the country who provide oral healthcare and education to chil-dren in school-based and school-linked settings. Thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, 60 partners gathered during OHA’s bi-annual National Share and Learn Conference in Philadel-phia this summer. “Henry Schein is proud to support OHA’s Share and Learn conference, which brings together a nationwide force of healthcare professionals commit-ted to improving the oral health of at-risk school children,” said Steve Kess, President of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. “We share OHA’s commitment to expanding access to care for underserved populations and improving lives through increased education and awareness of the importance of good oral health and look forward to continu-ing our work together.” Learn more about SAA at www.oralhealthamer-ica.org. FDA Approves Low-Level Light Therapy for Dentists OrthoPulse™ has received clear-ance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). OrthoPulse is a class II prescription medi-cal device intended for use during orthodon-tic treatment in conjunction with aligners or brack-ets and wires. Biolux Research, designer and developer of Light Accelerated Orthodontics™ technology and products, has already received regulatory approvals for OrthoPulse in several countries including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and the European Union. OrthoPulse uses low-level light therapy, or photobiomodulation, to stimulate the periodontium and alveolar bone surrounding the roots of the teeth, which, according to the company, leads to accelerated tooth movement and reduced treatment time. The device can be used with either braces or clear aligners. OrthoPulse is a one-size-fits-all sili-cone mouth guard that patients can use for self-treat-ment for 10 minutes a day at home. The device has accompany-ing native apps for iOS and Android platforms that the doctor and/or patient can use to track usage compliance. www.orthodontics.com Fall 2015 9
