The bill passed the California legislature with zero no votes. As Governor Newsom noted in his signing statement, "The bill includes significant policy changes related to the regulation of self-applied orthodontic treatments administered via telehealth and other technological platforms." Some of these changes include: • Requiring an electronic notice for patients receiving dental services through telehealth including a provision that the California Dental Board is the entity that regulates dentists and dental assistants and provides the telephone number and internet website of the California Dental Board. • Defining "unprofessional conduct" to include a treating dentist's fail-ure, prior to the initial use of orthodontic appliances, to review the patient's most recent radio-graphs (e.g. x-rays) or equivalent bone imaging. • Requiring individuals and entities providing dental services through telehealth to make available the name, telephone number, practice address, and California state license number of any dentist who will be involved in providing services to a patient prior to the rendering of services and when requested by a patient. • Prohibiting dental service providers from requiring patients to sign an agreement that limits the patient's ability to file a complaint with the California Dental Board. • Requiring that all laws and regula-tions governing professional responsibility, unprofessional conduct, and standards of practice that apply to a health care provider under the health care provider's license shall also apply to that health care provider while provid-ing telehealth services. Dentsply Sirona has fitted over 100 simulator units at the Univer-sity of Missouri -Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry as part of a $4 million project, making the UMKC Dental Training Lab one of the country’s largest and most advanced education facilities. The simulation and technology lab is intended for pre-clinical education, and allows dental students to prac-tice on “close to real life” models. Two UMKC training laboratories were equipped with 109 Intego student simulator units and two instructor units for its School of Dentistry students. The upgraded training labs now allow students to learn and practice in a realistic clinical setting from the very start as all dental procedures can be simulated under ergonomic condi-tions with correct instrumentation technique. The configuration of the workstations allows flexibility, such as easy switching from right-handed treatments to left-handed. Given the modular concept, the units are also suitable for both UMKC dental and dental hygiene curricula and include the option to add further functions and techno-logical updates in digital dentistry in the future.
