here is an old Swedish proverb that says, “Those who wish to sing always find a song.” This adage sums up a general truth about Tom Chap-man’s service to the American Orthodontic Society as Executive Director during the past 23 years. This saying reminds us that what we focus on is what we end up getting. During the past 23 years, Tom has focused on promoting, building, strengthening and guiding the AOS to new heights. And because of his focus, we have reached so many new peaks. Tom has spent timeless hours moving us toward his dream of T making the AOS, its courses, meet-ings, membership and this Journal the finest available. Tom’s “Just Do It“ style has inspired everyone he has worked for and with over his career to attain what motivates them and to move toward a goal of Barbara Zuniga, Tom Chapman and Porter Lyon greatness. Tom has been a leader, a boss, an inspiration and a friend. As your retirement approaches in January 2020, we want to thank you Tom for all you have done for your AOS friends during your tenure. Thank you for showing us how to find that song that can make a dream become reality. Thank you for teaching us that in order to be optimistic you need to find reasons to be filled with hope. And if you want to sing, you’ll need to find a song. And now that you have a new song to guide your days, delight in the melody. Enjoy your retirement and, as you sing your final verses with the AOS, we will all be singing along with you! 46 Winter 2020 JAOS
