The first painter went in, put down his drop sheets and got to work slapping white paint on the ceiling. Within one day, he was finished. The second painter approached his job, looked at the ceiling that he was to work on, then he went home and dreamed and planned of something he could do that would be magnifi-cent. He called in scaffolders and got busy, taking four years of painstaking work to complete his masterpiece. The first painter went to his next job and finished it in a day. Within a week, he ended up completing five ceilings. But no one remem-bered his work or his name and most of his work was painted over again within a few year’s time. He was just another painter doing what every other painter could do with no ambition, no vision and no expertise. The second painter went on to do other brilliant works and, to this day, everyone recognizes the name of Michelangelo. Whatever we do with our dental careers and orthodontic work, we have a choice. We can be like the first painter going through the motions doing ordinary forgettable work that others can easily replicate. Or, we can be like the second painter creating masterpieces that require commitment and passion. As we begin the second decade of this century, changes are occurring in the way orthodontics is provided and supplied to outpatients. Recently companies have stepped in, like the first painter in the story, slapping white paint across the ceiling. Thus, going through the motions to provide ordinary easily forgettable work without x-rays and without the patient knowing any basic informa-tion about their treating dentist. Many times, the patient is left with no vision or expertise involved with their orthodontic treatment. We need to continue to strive to be like the second painter, Michelangelo, creating masterpieces that require commitment and passion and vision. We need to make sure that we let patients know that there is a difference between slapping white paint across a ceiling and creating a masterpiece. We need to show them that our orthodon-tic work is like the work of the second painter, Michelangelo. When we start an orthodontic case from diagnosis to the end of treatment, we are creating masterpieces that require commit-ment, vision and passion. We do this through x-rays, a thorough diagnosis and attention to details. We treat them like patients, not customers. Their orthodontic treatment is an experience not just changing from one aligner to the next in a box. Orthodontic treatment is not a product or device: it is much more involved than slap-ping white paint across a ceiling. Orthodontic treatment is a profes-sional medical service done to create the patient’s masterpiece. In this issue of the Journal , we will be presenting three articles involving ways to correct Class II malocclu-sions. Continue to follow us through this year and beyond for information and help in creating your orthodontic masterpieces. Use this information and all the great instruction we offer to aim higher, and choose magnifi-cence over convenience. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS .......................
