AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS The Importance of Integrity “Integrity is not a conditional word; it doesn't blow in the wind or change with the weather.”-John D McDonald, American Writer We are called to a profession that demands integrity to our patients, our colleagues, our staff and our community. How important is integrity to us as individuals? Challenge it and see how it cuts to the core of the human spirit. Certainly, most dental professionals point their moral compass correctly. I, as many of you, practice in a small community and am reminded daily of what that community expects of me. We simply cannot let peer pressure, practice pressure or economic concerns tempt us to cut corners. The reputation of our profession and the well-being of our patients demand the best of ourselves. I say these things as our leadership and staff will begin the 44th year of the American Orthodontic Society in 2019. We have built our reputation by offering instructors and courses that teach quality Kimberly Suter, DDS AOS President mechanics without commercialization. Into our fifth decade, our instructors are “wet finger” dentists who actively practice using the mechanics they themselves teach. We will always stress the orthodontic window in which the GP should operate, never encouraging anyone to push the clinical envelope without more advanced education. The AOS will always be there for the basic and the advanced practitioner, but we clearly define where each should operate. I am honored to be the President of this great soci-ety of professionals and promise you that each deci-sion we make is with the highest level of integrity and with YOUR practice in mind. Best wishes for a prosperous 2019!
