Most of us have been lucky enough to attend a circus performance and watched as the animals and acrobats have preformed in their rings. In addition, we have all looked up from our seats to watch as the trapeze artists launch themselves from a small platform high on a tower while hanging onto a metal crossbar suspended from above by two cords. We spectators watch as they whip their body back and forth to create momentum. Then the artist swings down and quickly accelerates through the air swinging to the highest possible arch watching as the other trapeze bar comes toward them. Then, they release the bar and soar through space for a few brief seconds. During these seconds, they are in the gap between the two trapezes. They are in limbo while in this space yet it is only for a fraction of a second, but during this time they are soaring, spinning and trusting that the timing will be perfect and a firm hand-hold awaits them. As the other bar comes within reach, they grab it. So what does it mean to be "in the gap between the two trapezes". The gap is new and exciting but to get there and continue to the other side, you have to let go of the trapeze bar you are on. You have to give up the security and safety of where you are in order to get to the other bar on the other side. This year, give yourself the chance to move from where you are with the dental and orthodontic care you provide to the next bar of treatment you can provide. You can do this by attending the great courses offered this spring and summer as well as the outstanding annual meeting that will occur this fall. Decide what it is you are reaching for; it could be a chance to move forward with your orthodontic training or becoming a Fellow or Diplo-mate and moving forward in your orga-nization’s tier advancement. Begin honing your treatment skills and knowledge. Then when you decide to let go and reach for these bars, you will be in the space between the two trapezes. But do not worry, we are all here to help and encourage you as you move through that exciting space. The spring review and refresher courses, the annual meetings and this Journal are all great resources to help and encourage you to let go of the bar and sail into that unknown exciting area that sits between where you are and where you want to get to. Remem-ber that the solutions of yesterday won't overcome the challenges of today. What is required are new ideas, innovations and creativity. As I have said, all of this can be found in 2017 with member courses, peer-authored articles found in this Journal, and the educational and networking at the annual meetings. HD Thoreau once said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." Don't be afraid of letting go of the bar. Don't be afraid of the gap you have to soar through for a brief time. Don't hold on so tightly to the past bar. Everyone in your organization and this Journal are here to catch you. So swing high and jump in 2017, and we all will meet on the other side to laugh and talk about that space between the two trapezes that we all had to soar through to get to the next swinging bar on the other side.
