January is the start of the New Year and has always represented looking and moving forward. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar established January as the start of the year naming it after Janus the two-faced Roman god of doors and gates who was forever looking forward and back. Caesar felt starting the year off by looking forward would be the appropriate door to the New Year. Two thousand years later, we still seek out symbols of moving forward. One of these can be found featured prominently on the Australian coat of arms. In the center of this symbol of their federation of states is a shield depicting the badges of the six Australian states flanked by two of Australia's most iconic animals, the kangaroo and emu. You may wonder why the kangaroo and emu are flanking the country’s coat of arms. Why them rather than the cute koala, wombat, echidna or even the platypus? The reason involves Australia's aspiration and intent as a nation to always move forward and the fact that the kangaroo and emu are two animals that are unable to walk backwards. The emu's three toes cause it to fall if it tries to go back-wards and the kangaroo is prevented from moving backwards by its large tail. So, they always move only one way, forward. What a great concept and an even better belief to aspire to. Imagine if we all were only capable of taking forward steps, keeping our eyes fixed firmly on the future. With the start of the New Year, let's make a resolution to move forward with our orthodon-tic aspirations. This spring, attend one of our great refresher and review courses and start moving forward on becom-ing a board member or completing your tier advancement toward your diplomate status. Staying updated on your orthodontic treatment and education is important. Remember that the solutions of yesterday won't overcome the challenges of today. What is required are new ideas, inno-vations and creativity. All this can be found in 2015 with the great courses offered to you as members, the outstanding articles found in this Journal and the great Annual Meet-ings provided this fall. Let's begin moving forward step-by-step (or if you are a kangaroo hop by hop) toward a goal of tier advance-ment and updating and educating ourselves and staff. Maybe we can borrow the kangaroo and emu from the Australian coat of arms to become our mascots of forward thinking, bold steps and continuous improvements as we plot our orthodontic education course for the year. It all starts in January ---keep moving!
