During my trip, I was able to visit several great cities. I found myself captivated by some of the magnificent cathedrals that I saw and was able to view. Westminster, Notre Dame and the Cathedral of Porto are all phenomenal buildings, especially considering the eras in which they were built. One of the things that amazed me about these great cathedrals was that the architects and designers who came up with the plans and vision very rarely saw the final prod-uct due to the length of time it took to build the creations. As cathedrals took decades and often even centuries to complete, few people who worked on them expected to see them finished during their life-time. Being involved in the construction of a cathedral, even as the building patron, required a will-ingness to be part of a process that was larger than oneself. Importantly, they knew that this would be the case, but instead of simplifying their designs so that they could see their project in its final state, they designed the most extravagant trib-utes to God that they could imagine, knowing that their masterpieces would live on well beyond their own time on Earth. This is the 50th anniversary year of the American Orthodontic Soci-ety. So, with this year, we have been pausing to look back on what has been built through our organization and what is being added to make it even more spectacular in the future. Many of the great doctors who started building this organization by bringing together a group of general and pediatric dentists who have made orthodontics part of the treat-ment that they offer their patients, knew that it would evolve and not be completed while they were still here. But they worked to build a lasting legacy that has made a difference in the future of general and pediatric orthodontics. And so, we begin the next 50 years of the AOS with the next generation of members looking to build and strengthen this organiza-tion. This year, the state-of-the-art AOS Institute event center was finished and has begun to host courses and events like this year’s Spring Meeting. Online courses are available for members as well. Like the great cathedrals, AOS is signifi-cant to the heritage, culture and community life of the area we serve, that of dentists looking to practice orthodontics. We are continuing to improve and add on to grow with a new time and age. The original masterpiece of AOS is continuing to transform and evolve. Patrons are a part of this vision and process that is greater than oneself. Dr. Bill Wyatt and Dr. Len Carapezza have made significant contributions as part of a lasting legacy for the AOS. In addi-tion, many of our members and industry partners have also contributed to the future of AOS. Their names can be seen on the wall of the brand-new event center. You can also contact the AOS so that you can be part of the lasting legacy of AOS and the new event center. Ask yourself: “What am I building that will be completed after I’m gone that will be a lasting legacy which makes a difference in the future?” We have a purpose that goes beyond today and tomorrow, beyond a stan-dard five-year plan. We are meant to build cathedrals. AOS, like the great cathedrals, has involved the work of a generation beginning with the idea of a master architect and carried out by the labors of many. We all have a chance to continue to be part of something that will grow, evolve and last. What a wonderful legacy to leave. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS ............. AGpO/AOS Editor Lisa A.
