You must avoid any temptation of placing power chain or coils until the molars are Class I. The series of images in Fig. 23 shows a summary of mechanics and Fig. 24 shows a sample treatment plan used for bicuspids extractions. In this article we focus on which bicuspids should be extracted to optimize the chances for success once bicuspids have been removed. We also included some mechanics, anchorage and bracket prescription guide-lines. Sample treatment plans to illustrate proper case planning are provided. In the third installment of this series of articles on the topic of extraction of bicuspids, we will include a discussion of when to extract two bicuspids in the upper arch of some Class II cases or in the lower arch of some Class III cases.
