AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” -Vince Lombardi Michael J. Newman, DDS AOS President The legendary coach’s words resonate with me as I approach my final weeks of leadership with this superb organization. What we may have achieved in the last year, or will achieve in the coming years has not been, and never will be, the reflection of one individual. I thank my mentors, most particularly, Dr. Bob Gerety for inspiring me to achieve in orthodontics more than I could have imagined. I’m humbled to serve on a board with talented professionals whose insight, ideas, support and camaraderie have made this year produc-tive for the AOS and fun for me. Financial stability was my “priority one” from the day I took office. We’ve reviewed all aspects of our business operations from expenses to honoraria and believe we have made progress in ensuring the financial strength of the AOS for years to come. While the AOS is represented with members in nearly 30 international countries, our efforts to reach beyond our borders can be even stronger. This year, I initiated our first-ever international committee with the goal of building a strategic plan to better meet the needs of a growing international orthodontic community. Finally, I welcome you to our Annual Meeting in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. If you have not regis-tered, please do so today. The learning experience at one of our meetings is only eclipsed by the friendships that develop. I look forward to seeing you in Denver and for years to come. Michael J. Newman, DDS Dr. Robert Gerety 2014 Scholarship Awardee Announced During a recent ceremony at The Petroleum Club of Oklahoma City, AOS Executive Director Tom Chap-man and Board Director Dr. Anne Mary Orr had the pleasure of presenting the 2014 Robert G. Gerety Scholarship for Academic Excellence to Jacob D. Buhler of the University of Okla-homa College of Dentistry. According to Mr. Buhler, he learned the meaning of “service” from his father, a Colonel and pedi-atric dentist in the US Army. Mr. Buhler, as well, is an officer in the Army and intends to serve our coun-try as both soldier and oral surgeon. He obtained his undergrad degree from Utah Valley University in Orem and is a DDS candidate at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. Interested in Oral Maxillo-facial Surgery since beginning dental school, Mr. Buhler has rotated with OMS resident programs at Oklahoma University, the joint Army/Air Force OMS residency at San Antonio Military Medical Center (twice), and University of Tennessee – Memphis. Mr. Buhler has served as a volunteer in many orga-nizations and is an avid runner, receiving an athletic scholarship for competing in cross country and track at UVU. He was also champion of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in both 2012 and 2013. We thank him for his service to our country and wish him well in his future endeavors! Awarded annually since 2000 by the AOS Foundation, the Dr. Robert G. Gerety Scholarship is proud to recognize outstanding academic achievement with an emphasis on performance in orthodontic course work.
