Flowers, trees and bushes bud and from many of these blooming bushes come a variety of berries available to be picked. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are often people’s favorites, but I most enjoy picking and eating blackberries. This wonder-ful berry is high in cancer-fighting antioxidants, fiber and vitamin C. Plus they taste wonderful in cobblers and jams, as well as fresh right off the bush. But blackberry bushes have sharp thorns that can cause painful cuts to whoever is trying to pick these wonderful berries. Still, the risk is worth it to get the reward of these dark berries full of so much nutri-tious value and taste. There are people who love and enjoy these berries that can’t bring themselves to risk the pain of the thorns and brambles that protect the berries. Thus, we are left with two types of people: those who pick, eat and enjoy the fruit and have small scars to show for it, and those who live without pain, but have empty stomachs. Anything worth doing has pain attached to it. The pain of discipline, hard work, sacrifice, criti-cism and risk-taking are always part of putting yourself out there and advancing your knowledge. The season is right to start pick-ing the fruit to advance your orthodontic skills, knowledge and treatment that you can bring back to your practice. Tier Advancement is a start to gathering a wonderful harvest that is vital to a healthy orthodontic practice. It takes time, discipline and sacrifice to become a Fellow or a Diplomate, but sadly too many people prefer to take the comfortable path not willing to risk the “pain” or “scars” associated with advancement so they miss out on the “sweet fruit”. By not risking the “pain”, they can end up living with the regret of never achieving what they could (and should) if only they would risk a few abrasions. The same desire for an easy path can keep some from taking the many new orthodontic programs and courses being put together and offered to bring both you and your practice to the next level. Courses on early treatment, aligners, and both advanced and auxiliary courses can bring you a “bountiful harvest” of new skills to advance your orthodontic practice. There may be difficulties; sacrifice and hard work associated with moving forward, but it needs to be done to get to the “sweet fruit”. Sticking only with what you initially learned and never pushing to the next level may avoid the risk of a few abrasions but you never get the chance to advance. This fall, you’ll also have the chance to attend our Annual Meet-ings where your chances to learn from lecturers, other doctors and industry representatives will be abundant. There may be some “pain” taking the time and money to attend, but the payoff will be huge. Make a decision today to be willing to do what it takes to pick the “blackberries” in your personal and dental life rather than sitting around with an empty stomach.
