Early treatment has been an issue that we have discussed in past editions of this Journal. So, we are going to visit the subject again as it pertains to the “art and science” of orthodontics. For that reason, we have placed Leonardo da Vinci on the cover of this issue. It’s hard to talk about learning without mentioning the impressive genius of Leonardo. He was a master artist, anatomist, engineer, scientist, biologist and experi-menter. What makes his success that much more amazing is that he never received formal education beyond basic reading and writing and arithmetic. The knowledge he acquired came solely from his own observations and curiosity. Da Vinci was a genius because he not only questioned everything around him, but he actually physi-cally sought the answers to his ques-tions. He was not content with just reading about a study; he wanted to perform the experiment himself and use the evidence he observed to base his decisions and treatments. The things he saw helped strengthen his universal thinking – a blend of art and science. The question of early treatment for young patients is one of both art 4 Spring 2021 JAOS
