There are people who live their life like a nail. They are happy to be hidden away with all the other nails, waiting to be stuck into a wall somewhere. By being one of so many similar nails, they are anony-mous and replaceable and their whole life is impacted and influ-enced by external sources. Other people are like a hammer. There is only one of them in the toolbox and they are the ones who do the striking. They stand out and are useful; they impact and influ-ence the world around them. The problem for tools and other devices like a hammer or nail is that they don't get to choose what they are or what their role us; but we do. So, it is important to make a difference by choosing wisely. Many times, there are dentists who end up like nails. They begin to listen to the insurance companies and government agencies that try to convince them that they are all alike and replaceable and one is the same as every other. They are told that they need to remain anonymous, impacted and influ-enced by external sources, fee schedules and networks who dictate where and how they will be used and pounded upon. In this issue of the Journal, we have assembled for you a number of articles that can help you become or stay a hammer and help stop the external forces that want to make you into a nail. Dr. Chris Baker will address whether you are working IN or ON your business. Dr. Juan Echeverri and Dr. Anna Kalmanovich will both present case studies that help to show how you can work to continue to treat your patients so that you stand out and impact and influence their lives and over all health and thus the world around you as well. Also Dr. Ralph Nicassio will discuss how to elevate the treatment you perform for your patients taking you and your treat-ment to the next level. In addition, don't forget to mark on your calendars this year’s Annual Fall meeting. You will be presented with three days of lectures and workshops by some of the top people in our organization and dentistry.
