AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Share Your Talents And Support One Another A recent edition of Inside Dentistry featured an article entitled “Today’s Orthodontics: Creating a Straight Line from Gp’s to Patients”. The value of this article, which features the AOS, is to remind those who practice orthodontics that the dental world takes our growing role and its impact quite seriously, and we, therefore, have a leadership responsibility. The specialty world has spent considerable money debunking our contribu-tions, yet the facts are on the table. Gp/Pedo orthodon-tics is growing and is impactful to the dental commu-nity and important to the patients we serve. Just ask industry leaders. Mr. Bradford Clatt of Densply Sirona Orthodontics, is quoted, “Over the last decade, general dentists have continued to explore new opportunities to expand their procedural and service offerings to provide more comprehensive care to their patients.” It may be only aligners or limited Phase I in the begin-ning, but as time progresses and confidence builds, so does the thirst for more knowledge. As members of the American Orthodontic Society, and leaders in our communities, we need to Twana Farley-Duncan, DDS be encouraging and supportive of AOS President our colleagues who show a timid interest in orthodontics. I encourage you to anchor a study group, share your talent at your local dental conference, or just talk one-on-one with colleagues. We’re important individually, but the AOS is powerful as a collective advocate and teacher. We grow as an organization if we support each other and all dentists in our community in the practice of orthodontics. I challenge you to be one of those leaders. I will see you in Clearwater Beach, September 13-17 for our Annual Meeting. Twana Farley-Duncan, DDS 2017 Roger Rupp Scholarship Winner Michael Greaves, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry fourth year student, is this year’s Dr. Roger Rupp Scholarship for Academic Excellence winner. Mr. Greaves, a native of Fenton, Missouri, is the son of a dentist and is looking forward to working in public health for the first few years. Once he starts his own practice, orthodon-tics will be part of what he offers his patients. This scholarship, now in its 13th consecutive year, is only available because of the generosity of our membership who donate to our Foundation. If you are interested in donating or participating in our scholarship program, contact Mr. Tom Chapman at 972-234-4000. AOS Publications Services is proud to bring you a complete line-up of Krames patient education materials. It’s just one more way we facilitate your practice of orthodontics. The AOS is one of only a few dental organizations in the country offering an extensive line of Krames dental booklets at terrific discounts. Interesting and informative, these booklets save hours of your valuable time repeating instructions. In addition, they are great help when obtaining informed consent. www.orthodontics.com Spring 2017 41
