The purpose of this is to negate the distalization until you have corrected the crossbite. After you have created the expansion as Fig. 6 depicts, you then simply cut the metal wires and let the pre-activated coils distalize the molars. Also note the rests on the upper primary molars. It is important to employ flowable composite over these onto the occlusal surfaces to secure them to the teeth. The expansion took three months for full correc-tion.
