ORTHO INDUSTRY NEWS Oral Appliance Therapy for Better Sleep Dentists pioneered the use of oral appliance therapy for the treatment of sleep apnea and snor-ing. A study published in Sleep Magazine found that as many as 92% of middle-aged men and 83% of middle-aged women may have undiag-nosed moderate-to-severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recom-mends oral appliances and CPAP as the No. 1 treatments for mild and moderate sleep apnea. ATG/Space Maintainers announces the availability of Apnea Guard, a prefabricated oral diagnostic tool for sleep appliance therapy. Simple and easy to operate, the Apnea Guard systemati-cally determines the optimal protrusive setting for a long-term custom sleep appliance. It is capable of advancing the mandible in 1 mm increments and is FDA-cleared for up to 29 nights of in-home use. Fitting the Apnea Guard requires PVS impression material common to most dental offices. For more information, contact ATG/Space Maintainers at (800) 423-3270 or www.atgsleep.com. Radiographic Material Simplifies CT Scans New from Great Lakes, Biocryl Form-X is a radiographic stent material that allows tooth position communication on CT scan images, simplifies the stent fabrica-tion process, and trims easily and quickly. Form-X is designed for use in a Biostar ® or MiniSTAR ® positive pressure thermal-forming machine, and adapts to a replica of the diag-nostic wax-up model or directly to a composite mock-up. Once thermal-formed and trimmed, the appliance is inserted in the patient's mouth and a CT scan is taken. The scanned image reveals crisp and distinct outlines, contours and embrasures to help determine proper implant angle and emergence to conform within the planned pros-thesis for optimal restorative outcome.
