AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS Much More Than A Requirement According to the Wikipedia definition an Annual Meeting is a “legal and bylaw required gathering of association members to review the events of the past year, look forward to the coming year, and to choose the new leadership team”. Fortunately for me, my first AOS Annual Meeting in Dallas in 1999 proved to be so much more than a “required gathering of members to review the business of the Society”. What I found on that weekend was an association that teaches, supports, and respects each dues-paying member and industry friend. I have never missed an Annual Meeting in thirteen years, and hope to continue attending for another thirteen consecu-tive years. It has become the highlight of my professional year. If you have never attended an annual gather-ing of AOS members, I urge you to add this year’s to your calendar NOW. We will be meeting in Chicago, August 15-18 in the beautiful Intercon-tinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue. Brochures have already arrived in your mailbox and I hope you have seen what a magnificent line-up of speakers and activities await attendees. Together with Juan J. Solano, DDS our friends and colleagues at AOS President the Academy of GP Orthodon-tics, we have a weekend that exceeds any other professional meeting you may choose in the coming year. We offer four days of programs starting with Dr. Ed Gonzalez and the free AOS Foundation Symposium on Thursday. We follow that with 26 hours of lecture over the next three days for both the practitioner and the auxiliary staff. To save money, register now online at www.orthodontics.com or call the central office at (800) 448-1601. See you in Chicago! Juan J. Solano, DDS 2013 Dr. Robert Gerety Scholarship Awardee Announced On April 11th, at The Petroleum Club of Okla-homa City, AOS Executive Director Tom Chap-man and Dr. David Jackson had the pleasure of presenting the 2013 Robert G. Gerety Scholar-ship for Academic Excellence to Ashlea E. Turpin-Jones of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. A love of science runs deep in Ms. Turpin-Jones’ family. Her great-grandfather was an anatomy/physi-ology teacher. Her grandmother read science text-books in her spare time. She has one brother who is a pharmacist and one who is a dentist. Her own dream is to own a practice in a rural area in order to raise her children in a small town atmosphere and to provide quality dental care to those for whom it might otherwise be out of reach. Ms. Turpin-Jones, originally from Yukon, OK, obtained her undergrad degree from University of Central Oklahoma before pursuing her DDS at University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. She has interned in several practices and donated her time to numerous community service organizations. In an effort to provide the best care possible to future patients, Ms. Turpin-Jones will spend an addi-tional year in an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency before beginning her career. Awarded annually since 2000 by the AOS Foun-dation, the Dr. Robert G. Gerety Scholarship is proud to recognize outstanding academic achievement with an emphasis on performance in orthodontic course work. The AOS Charitable Foundation provides educational grants only through the generous support of our members. If you would like to know more about our scholar-ship program or assist by pledging funds, please contact our Executive Director Tom Chapman at (800) 448-1601. www.orthodontics.com May/June 2013 45
