They are remarkable creatures and efficient killers. Swimmers and surfers at beaches around the world are terrified when they see that triangular dorsal fin pop above the surf. Great whites, hammerheads, tiger and mako sharks are some of the many species that are part of the shark family. In my many visits to the Shedd Aquarium on Chicago’s lakefront, I have sat and watched and observed this amazing group of predators who have roamed our oceans for over 400 million years. The fact that these creatures have been around for such a long time suggests that there may be a few helpful principles that we can learn from sharks, principles that can help us in a competitive world. Never stop moving. As a part of their stream-lined design, most of the larger species of sharks need to always keep moving in order to breathe. They take water in through their mouths and the water passes over their gills in a process called ram ventilation. If these sharks stop moving for a short period of time, they drown and die. We live and practice dentistry in a world that is going through constant dramatic change. It would be a bit excessive to suggest that if we stop moving we’ll die, but it’s important to remember that if we don’t continue to learn, grow and develop, we’ll be left behind and we will struggle to stay afloat. In order to continue moving and staying a float in the world of orthodontics, it’s important to stay on top of what is going on. This upcoming fall, you have the opportunity to achieve this by attending the AOS and AGpO annual meetings. Learning about TADS, interceptive orthodontics, arch development, case finishing, xylitol and other great topics are important to keeping you moving and afloat in the world of orthodontics. Never miss an opportunity. Sharks have an excellent sense of smell. They are able to sense blood in the water from miles away. In addition, the hammerhead shark can detect electrical current through the shape of their unique heads thus enabling them to find their prey more effectively. Once they find what they are looking for, they hone in to catch a meal. You should also be constantly on the lookout for opportunities to sharpen and improve your orthodontic skills. The lectures, exhibitors, colleagues and friends who will be at this year’s annual meetings will be waiting to help you improve your technique teach you new skills and add to the performance of your practice. Don’t miss an opportunity. Equip yourself for success. Sharks are well equipped to sit at the top of the food chain. They have rows of razor-sharp teeth that are replaced over time, a streamlined body that’s built for speed, and the ability to detect prey from a distance. All this combined makes them extremely effective hunters. You need to make sure you equip yourself for success with the best in orthodontic treatment, equipment and supplies available. To do this, make it a priority to attend this year’s annual meetings. Stop by the exhibitor’s floor to find out what new items can make you and the treatment you provide more successful. Talk and meet with the top indus-try reps one on one. Never stop moving by continuing your orthodontic learning. Never miss an opportunity to attend some of the best in GP and pediatric orthodontic education and make sure you equip yourself for success by attending and checking out the many exhibitors. Put yourself at the top of the orthodontic food chain with as many razor sharp teeth as possible by attending the annual meeting. I’ll see you in Memphis and Houston!
